Event description | Hosted at Canterbury Christ Church University in collaboration with the Primary English Research Hub, United Kingdom Literacy Association, the Shepway Teaching Alliance and Writing Rocks, this day event focusing on Writing for Pleasure includes keynote speeches from renowned author and educationalist Michael Rosen and author Piers Torday, as well as a selection of writing for pleasure workshops led by professionals from across the writing community. Available workshops include: - Developing writing journals. - Spelling for pleasure. - Writing memoir with children. - Teachers as writers. Further information: This event is a Regional Conference for the UK Literacy Association, a registered charity that has been working to improve Literacy in the United Kingdom since 1963. Michael Rosen is a best-selling English children's author and poet, and served as Children's Laureate from June 2007 to June 2009. You can find out more about him at his webpage, accessible here: www.pierstorday.co.uk Writing Rocks will also be presenting the Writing for Pleasure Manifesto, a copy of which will be sent to you when you make your booking. A selection of workshops, which you can sign up to on the day, will also be led by professionals from a range of organisations including the Primary English Research Hub (englishresearchhub.wordpress.com), Writing Rocks (literacyforpleasure.wordpress.com) and Target Literacy (targetliteracy.co.uk), as well as Martin Galway (Twitter: @GalwayMr). Payment and cancellation: The rate of £95.00 for the day applies to all participants, not including students or UKLA members. Please provide your student number or UKLA membership number when you book your place for a reduced rate of £45.00 (student) or £75.00 (member) respectively. Once you have submitted your booking application, an invoice will be generated and posted to your respective school/personal address. Places may be cancelled free of charge up to one week prior to the event. Any cancellation within one week of the event will result in full payment. |

Training objectives | The keynote speeches and workshops will explore what we mean by 'writing for pleasure,' and how schools can create conditions that promote writing as a pleasurable experience and to promote a love and ownership of writing which will be continued into children’s personal and working lives long after they leave school.
