Event description Workshop content
• This one-day workshop will provide a breakdown of the range of skills necessary to establish and maintain a friendship and offer some strategies for their application
• Participants will consider when, where and how friendship skills programmes can be delivered so that there is a measurable impact on learning, behaviour and wellbeing for pupils
• Participants will receive a two-part friendship skills pack that may be used to deliver a friendship skills group for children and young people with social communication difficulties

Target Audience
This workshop has been designed for staff working with primary aged children but will have some relevance for older pupils. The emphasis is upon children with social communication difficulties (including pupils with autism) who seek friendships but fail to maintain them.

Training objectives Workshop objectives
Participants will consider the development of friendship skills and understand the particular difficulties that some children and young people experience. Participants will consider what the structure and content of a friendship skills group might be, in particular regard to children and young people with social communication difficulties.

Participants will consider why friendships can be tricky for children and young people with social communication difficulties.
