Kent Maths Conference 2020 - Growing Resilient Mathematicians

Event code SCH 20/352
Event description This year’s Maths Conference will be wholly online meaning you don’t even have to leave home or school to participate! With a mix of live and recorded sessions spanning National Maths Week, there really is something for everyone, with the option to get the rest of your staff involved in the sessions and no need for supply cover.

This year’s conference will focus on how we can support pupils to achieve the three key aims of the National Curriculum:
• become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
• reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
• can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Booked and confirmed delegates will be able to access the 3 live sessions outlined below and then given access to 4 pre recorded sessions which can be watched at any time.

Live Session information:
1) Reasoning in Daily Maths Lessons
Gareth Metcalfe – Tuesday 10th November, 4pm to 5pm
2) Digging into the non-statutory guidance: language as a scaffold for mathematical thinking
Clare Christie - Wednesday 11th November, 4pm to 5pm
3) Great Depth – for all?
Andrew Jeffrey – Thursday 12st November, 4pm to 5pm

Biographies for the 3 speakers above can be found on the attached document.

Pre Recorded Sessions:
1) Early Number Sense – Gareth Metcalfe
2) Building Fluency with 52 amazing assistants; why playing cards are the ultimate CPA tool – Andrew Jeffrey
3) Madmatics; building maths confidence through storytelling – Mundella Primary School
4) A journey through division in the primary school – Clare Christie

Booked and confirmed delegates will be sent the links for both the recorded and live sessions on Monday 9th November.

The live sessions will run as interactive Zoom sessions. Confirmed delegates will be e-mailed the links for all sessions 24 hours in advance of the first session. Please ensure you are able to access Zoom at least 1 hour prior to the session. Please note that these are not recorded and therefore not available to watch at a later date and delegates need to attend as a live session.

If you have not used Zoom before and require helpful tips, we recommend having a look at these:
