Event description This course consists of three half day sessions. It is ideally suited for school Senior Leaders, Assistant and Deputy Headteachers looking to move to a headship position in the future and requiring a better all-round understanding of school finance and governance.

Delegates are expected to attend all three sessions.


Course Description
To provide information on schools finance. To develop strategic leadership skills with particular emphasis on resources, working through practical examples of real school situations and budgets.

The sessions will include:

Session 1 - Financial leadership, management and accountability.
An overview of how schools funding is allocated and the role of the Schools Funding Forum including practical working with 3 year plans.

Session 2 - Budget Planning and Monitoring.
School Development Plans, Leadership and Governance to include the Schools Financial Value Standard (SFVS) and financial reporting to governors. Interpreting and questioning budget monitoring reports.

Session 3 - Financial Controls, Benchmarking and Fraud Prevention.
Statutory reports and benchmarking as a valuable resource. A new headteacher’s experience of finance. Financial controls to
include discussions and feedback on case studies. Financial controls and fraud awareness

Further information
Each session will be both practical and theory based, working closely with current experienced Headteachers and Schools Financial Services staff. The course offers an opportunity to network with colleagues, exchange ideas and good practice. 
Training objectives Training Objectives
By the end of the course delegates will have an appreciation of the key aspects of school funding and how the school funding forum operates.

Delegates will be aware of the financial controls and accountability in school for the head teacher and governors to ensure that a school is financially well managed. They will be also able to interpret financial information based on reports provided in a school to help make strategic decisions.
