Early Careers Teachers Maths Programme - Ratio and Proportion: Real Life Examples

Event code SCH 21/742
Event description Session 3: Ratio and Proportion: Real Life Examples

This is session three of a series of six sessions. The six sessions can be treated as a whole course (see course code SCH21/738) or can be attended individually.

Third in the series of sessions reviewing the strands of maths alongside various pedagogical approaches. Proportion lays the foundations for good algebraic thinking. Too often premature memorisation of rules is likely to inhibit development of proportional reasoning. We will look at ways to sketch, describe and represent proportion problems and relationships between quantities in informal, invented ways before moving towards symbols and algebra. This can be often be easily related to real life problems such in slopes, scale, probabilities, vectors and rates. It will be through a lens of proportional reasoning often see the links to real life.
