Event description Academic Literacy for pupils with low literacy skills including EAL learners

This training will develop teachers’ knowledge of the pedagogy of language acquisition in order to move pupil’s use of language from basic interpersonal communicative skills (BICS) to cognitive and academic language proficiency (CALP) which is the key to cognitive development.
Through this structured, scaffolded approach pupil will develop their speaking and listening, reading and writing skills, identifying the language functions across different genres in all subject areas.

** PLEASE NOTE: The Equality Diversity Inclusion Team (EDIT) are offering a suite of 4 English as an Additional Language training sessions to equip all staff in schools to meet the needs of EAL learners, from the induction of new arrivals to accelerating the progress of more advanced bilingual learners.
These courses are available as a suite of four sessions or as stand alone units. Schools purchasing all four consecutive sessions will be only charged for three but need to book onto SCH 21/762 only. **

This session will run as an interactive Zoom session. Delegates will be sent the link no later than 24 hours before the start date. Please ensure you are able to access Zoom at least 1 hour prior to the session. Please note that these are not recorded and therefore not available to watch at a later date and delegates need to attend as a live session.

Participants who are unable to install Zoom can join our training using the Zoom web client on their desktop web browser. The Join from your browser link will appear after the user clicks on the link to join the meeting.

• increase awareness of EAL pedagogy and key points around second language acquisition
• develop an understanding of academic literacies
• explore strategies to develop academic literacy in different subject areas
