Event code SCH 19/491
Event description Metacognition refers to student’s ability to be aware of what they are thinking about and choosing helpful thought process. Research from the Sutton Trust Education Endowment Foundation suggests that metacognition is one of the most effective and cost efficient ways to help students make gains in their learning; yet the majority of teachers are not yet clear exactly how this can be applied in classrooms to improve the outcomes for students.
The aim of this INSET is to raise awareness of the benefits of using metacognitive approaches and enable you to make confident decisions that will help your students to become more aware of their thinking about learning - so that they are better able to apply different strategies to overcome areas of difficulty and improve their learning skill.
The course is delivered over two afternoons spread over two weeks giving delegates the opportunity to practice ideas between sessions and reflect on learning in the second session. This follows known adult learning models that helps to embed learning.
Training objectives • Develop an understanding of metacognition and self-regulated learning – including exploring research and up-to-date evidence.

• Give the skills and knowledge to be able to implement metacognitive and growth mindset strategies in the classroom.

• Provide the tools and practical resources to use in schools.
